Banded Clock

Banded Clock

The representation of time is a core assignment in many curricula for interactive art and computational design. This simple sketch, created while I was a graduate student in John Maeda's Aesthetics and Computation group at MIT, is an "abstract clock" which depicts the seconds, minutes and hours of the current time as a series of striated bands. The numeric value of the time is mapped directly to the number of black-white alternations in each band; the bands are ordered seconds-minutes-hours from top to bottom.

The Banded Clock has been featured as a case study in "Processing: A Programming Handbook for Visual Designers and Artists" by Casey Reas and Ben Fry (MIT Press, 2007).

Banded Clock can be experienced in this interactive Java applet.
